Books/Book Chapters

  •Supporting Adults to Live in the Community - A chapter by Steven J. Taylor, in Adults with Down Syndrome, S. M. Pueschel (Ed.). This chapter examines community living in the context of a critique of the principle of the least restrictive environment and the traditional residential services continuum. It describes characteristics of current, alternative approaches such as supported living and self-determination. (2006)

  •Out of the Institution Trap - A chapter by John O'Brien, in K. Johnson & R. Traustadottir (Eds.), Deinstitutionalization and people with intellectual disabilities: In and out of institutions (pp. 259-273). This chapter discusses resistance to and dissolving of the institution trap, and outlines as agenda for moving on from institutionalization. (2005)

  •The Institutions Are Dying, but Are Not Dead Yet - A chapter by Steven J.Taylor, in K. Johnson & R. Traustadottir (Eds.), Deinstitutionalization and people with intellectual disabilities: In and out of institutions (pp. 93-107). This chapter examines the history of the use of the continuum model of services and the principle of the least restrictive environment. It concludes with discussion of the consensus and controversy that still surrounds deinstitutionalization today. (2005)

  •Reviews of the Medicaid Home and Community-Based Services Programs in Six States - These reports summarize findings and observations of site visits to six states between February and August, 2000 to view and discuss with key state officials, service providers, program participants and others the implementation, outcomes and challenges of each state’s Medicaid Home and Community- Based Services (HCBS) “waiver” program. The six states were chosen based on an array of statistical data on state HCBS programs to reflect the full range of “development.” (2000)

  •2010 FAST Family Support Survey: National Results (PDF) - The Family Advocacy and Support Training (FAST) project was funded by the Administration on Developmental Disabilities. The FAST project was designed to develop and test resources to assist families of youth and young adults with disabilities through the transition from school to adult life. Its curriculum development and training components focused specifically on people who were ethnically and socioeconomically diverse. This report summarizes the results of a 2010 national internet survey of 2,416 parents or relatives of children and youth ages 11 years to 39 years with disabilities from 54 states or U.S. territories. This report describes key information needs, unmet service needs, and service quality for youth and young adults with disabilities in transition from school to adulthood (defined for this effort as ages 12 to 22 years).   •2010 FINDS National Survey (PDF) - In 2010 The Arc of the United States conducted a national internet survey that aimed to capture the perspectives of people with ID/DD and their family caregivers. The Family and Individual Needs for Disability Supports (FINDS) survey focused on issues including educational, housing, employment and support needs of people with ID/DD and their families. More than 5,287 family respondents participated in the survey; of these, three-quarters shared their home with a person with ID/DD. Overall, 95% of respondents were parents, siblings, children, grandparents or other relatives of a person with ID/DD. This is the technical report for that project.
