"Current Challenges Facing Secondary Education and Transition Services: What Research Tells Us" Authors: David R. Johnson, Robert A. Stodden, Ellen J. Emanuel, Richard Luecking, and Mary Mack Exceptional Children, vol 68, no 4, Summer 2002 This article presents findings from research that identifies key issues influencing the implementation of the federal transition requirements of the IDEA Amendments of 1997 and policies at the state and local levels; examines the impact and implications of recent general education reform initiatives on secondary education and transition services; and presents major policy, system, and other challenges that must be addressed over the next several years. Specific strategies and recommendations are offered in relation to each of the major challenges examined in this article.

Families and the New Freedom Initiative II
While the New Freedom Initiative addresses “Americans with disabilities” as the ultimate beneficiary of its provisions, it also contains a strong implied mandate to consider those beneficiaries in the family context.

The Family as a Critical Partner in the Achievement of a Successful Employment Outcome
This publication explores the contributions families make to the achievement of successful employment outcomes for individuals receiving vocational rehabilitation services. It is the result of a year long study conducted for the 26th Institute on Rehabilitation Issues. The study group producing this report was composed of vocational rehabilitation professionals, family members and consumers . Study group activities, including this report, were coordinated by the Region 6 Region 6 Rehabilitation Continuing Education Program (RCEP) at the University of Arkansas.

A Survey of Federally Funded Parent Centers -- Technical Assistance on Transition & the Rehabilitation Act
This report presents the results of recent survey of the nation’s parent centers that identified what parent centers consider to be the greatest needs of transition-aged youth with disabilities and their families. The survey was conducted by Dr. Susan Hasazi, University of Vermont, with PACER Center’s TATRA (Technical Assistance on Transition and the Rehabilitation Act) project.

The New Freedom Initiative
President Bush announced the New Freedom Initiative on February 1, 2001, as part of a nationwide effort to remove barriers to community living for people with disabilities. Today, there are more than 54 million Americans living with a disability, representing a full 20 percent of the U.S. population. Almost half of these individuals have a severe disability affecting their ability to see, hear, walk or perform other basic functions of life. In addition, there are more than 25 million family caregivers and millions more who provide aid and assistance to people with disabilities.
